Straight Talking (Friday Fictioneers, 16 March 2012)

 Straight Talking

You don’t like me, right?   I sense these things.  But you will.  I’ll wait.

What matters is that he likes me.  A lot.  So you better get used to having me around.

If it comes to that, I don’t particularly like you.  Well, not much anyway.

You need too much attention.  You know that?  High maintenance, his buddies say.  No way to a man’s heart.

I’m special to him, we go way back.  And I’m gonna be here for quite a while yet, honey.

So quit licking that ass will you, and fetch your ball.  We’ll try again, huh?

About Sandra

I used to cruise the French waterways with my husband four or five months a year, and wrote fiction and poetry. Now I live on the beautiful Dorset coast, enjoying the luxury of being able to have a cat, cultivating an extensive garden and getting involved in the community. I still write fiction, but only when the spirit moves me - which isn't as often as before. I love animals, F1 motor racing, French bread and my husband, though not necessarily in that order.

Oh that was very cute. And I agree it was not sad. It’s like a competition and the dog threw down the gauntlet. I know that you’ve already seen mine but here’s the link again: http://remakingme-atiyatownes.blogspot.com/2012/03/friday-flash-fiction-alpha.html

Great story, and the last line was a twist. I love dogs, and you got the attitude down perfectly!

  3. I was trying to figure out whose perspective that was from the whole story… whether it was the dog, or somebody who knows the dog. It’s only now I realise it’s a woman who’s involved with a man who owns the dog; and the dog doesn’t like her.

It’s pretty funny, I can appreciate the story now. Perhaps it’s just too late at night to read it right… Then again, I read the others easily enough…

I read this drabble wondering if the speaker was a woman or a dog…woman/dog. And then I realized at the end, it was the woman struggling to make friends with the dog! Brilliant!

    Dear Sandra,

One of the best so far this morning. I really enjoyed the way you made us think, think, think. Girlfriend to man’s best friend. A heart to heart for the ages.

  10. Hi Sandra,
You got me. I thought I was hearing the voice of the dog until the last line put things in a whole different perspective. Although I’m sure some people would lick their ass if they could! Great voice in this story!

Lol, a curious little piece. I was convinced it was the girl talking at the start and then I began to doubt myself round about the high maintenance line. Bu the ending made it all clear. The confusion meant I had to read it a second time, but I enjoyed it. You clearly showed the jealousy between his two girls!

  18. Superb stuff with a good element of head scratching. When I realised it was the girlfriend’s voice, I had a good chuckle. A very effective twist that doesn’t lean on the dun-dun-duuun! factor.
Also, I think you communicate a great sense of character here, both for the girlfriend and the dog. No easy thing to do in such a short time. Brilliant work and well deserving of all the positive comments 🙂

Well, actually it was the new woman talking, though the reader was supposed to assume it was the dog, until the last line. But your take on it is even funnier! It’s amazing the different ways that people have read this. 🙂

  29. The age old rivalry between woman and dog! We don’t write about it often, but it certainly exists – I know from my own experience. Guilt rises when I think about how often I would have preferred being with my dog to being with my family.

Thanks for commenting. In our household, I think the rivalry was between me and my husband for the attention of the dogs. Though I think the boy-dog was a bit possessive about me … 🙂
