Checkin’ out the Joint (Friday Fictioneers, May 2012)

Checking Out Joint

Madison Woods’ Friday Fictioneers  Photo challenge.

And this really was a challenge!

“Can you pull me up, Dwight?   I can’t seem to get over this ledge.”

“Shhh, Ruby, they’ll hear ya.”

“I thought you said this place closed down.”

“Well there’s folks in there now, new owners maybe.”

“What do they look like?”

“Whadd’ya mean, look like?  Like humans, you know, arms, legs, faces, all that stuff.”

“I mean do they look …well.. er … “

“What?”

“Liberal-minded, I guess.”

“How’d I know?  What’s liberal-minded look like?  What’s eatin’ ya Ruby.”

“Well you know, not everyone approves of lunars and crecopias mixin’ an’ all that.”

“Shoot Ruby,  just get yo’ furry ass up here and see for yo’self.”

About Sandra

I used to cruise the French waterways with my husband four or five months a year, and wrote fiction and poetry. Now I live on the beautiful Dorset coast, enjoying the luxury of being able to have a cat, cultivating an extensive garden and getting involved in the community. I still write fiction, but only when the spirit moves me - which isn't as often as before. I love animals, F1 motor racing, French bread and my husband, though not necessarily in that order.

Even for Moth-kind folks can be so narrow. This was excellent, Sandra. Funny but also a slice of real mixed in.

  3. The angst of moths. So funny. I’m a huge admirer of your dialogue – you make it seem so easy, but I can’t get anyone or anything to sound real when I try it.

  22. Hi Sandra,
Yes, most of the crowd about McD’s is liberal-minded. They’d have to be to eat the food! Great use of dialog to develop this, and I loved everything coming from the moths’ POV. Thanks for reading and commenting on my story. Happy waterwaying~

I’ve never been inside a McD’s, though I did once visit a Wimpy Bar. 😦 Thanks for commenting. We haven’t been able to get out of the port yet, the river’s running too high and fast…

I don’t quite know what lunars and crecopias are, but based on what she’s worried about, makes me wanna find out.

Thanks for commenting Lora. As a Brit I wouldn’t be able to differentiate between American accents (well apart from deep south perhaps). I wasn’t sure where the accent came from in mine, I modelled it on a comedian we see a lot of over here, Reginald D Hunter. Love him!
