The prompt this week from 100WCGU was the phrase
‘There’s a real buzz about this place.’
“You’ll like it here,” said Matron, “there’s so much for residents to do.”
I hated it; bingo seemed such a moronic pastime, bridge brought out the worst in people, and there’s something frankly distasteful about women dancing breast to breast with other similarly endowed women.
And then Frank enlisted me, for a project he was working on in the cellar. Just a bit of needlework, here and there; I’ve always been a fine seamstress.
Matron wasn’t pleased.
“Mr Enstein,” she thundered, “you’ll have to leave.”
That was monstrously unfair.
I miss Frank.
Things were really buzzing when he was around.

Enjoyed this. Did wonder if there was something a little darker going on behind the scenes (what WAS she sewing?) or whether it was just an innocent pasttime. Either way I enjoyed this. A lot.

I do really enjoy reading your pieces! Your characters are so rounded and real. Don’t like matron much though … what a sour puss! The dancing breast to breast really made me cringe … and so true too – really brought a smile to my face.

Briliant – I also loved the bit about dancing breast to breast. As a dance teacher I’ve often had to dance the man’s steps with another lady, and I’ve always been relieved not to be well-endowed enough to have to worry about slotting one either side!
I didn’t get the Frankenstein reference till I saw the other comments – now I’m starting to see Matron’s point!

It’s an uncomfortable thought, isn’t it? But I see you’ve thought about the mechanics of it. 🙂 It’s a problem for which I’ve only ever been on the receiving end too!
