When Midnight Comes (Five Sentence Fiction, January 2013)

This week’s one word prompt from Lillie McFerrin’s Five Sentence Fiction was “Midnight“.  Happy New Year to all FSF writers!

“He’s late… will he come, do you think, mother?” asked the daughter, as her mother fluttered around the kitchen, preparing a plate of food and glancing anxiously at the clock as the hands slowly approached twelve o’clock.

“If he does, you make sure you don’t take him to your bed again,” the mother snapped, “it’s not right, and you know that perfectly well.

The girl smiled to herself, knowing she had no intention of obeying her mother; the last time he had been denied entry to her bed there had been roars of rage, doors had been splintered, furniture destroyed.

The gate creaked, and he crept silently up the path, glancing cautiously around him to make sure he wasn’t being observed, before sliding quietly through the cat flap.

Midnight had arrived home.

Well, what were you thinking?

I'd love to hear your views; it reassures me I'm not talking to myself.
