The Little Shop of Horrors (Friday Fictioneers, September 2013)

Copyright John Nixon

We’ve driven about 650 miles today through France and southern England whilst I pondered over this Friday Fictioneer’s photo challenge.  It’s not one of my best, but I wasn’t in the mood to develop something schmaltzy or poignant.  Sorry! 😉

Morticia sighed as she detached the vampire kitten from her neck and floated across the shop to remonstrate with the ectoplasm in the corner.

“Put those books back where you found them” she said, slapping the part that most closely resembled a hand.

“Invasion of personal space,” shrieked the ectoplasm, and the succubus rummaging for matching teacups hurried over, hopeful for a piece of the action.

The head of the ghostly bride in the window began to rotate wildly.  “Customers,” she hissed, as two young Goths marched inside, eyeing their surroundings with satisfaction.

“Mega or what?” said one.

The other sighed contentedly.

“Wicked, man.”

About Sandra

I used to cruise the French waterways with my husband four or five months a year, and wrote fiction and poetry. Now I live on the beautiful Dorset coast, enjoying the luxury of being able to have a cat, cultivating an extensive garden and getting involved in the community. I still write fiction, but only when the spirit moves me - which isn't as often as before. I love animals, F1 motor racing, French bread and my husband, though not necessarily in that order.

Morticia is the perfect name for the proprietress of a Little Shop of Horrors. Now, to the Goths–customers? Or sale goods? Good story for someone who’s just driven 650 miles.

  7. Dear Sandra,

If anyone could pull off this type of story with grace and style (and tongue firmly planted in cheek) it would be you. I’m still chuckling as I type. I can picture it right down to the two young Goths. Incidentally, for what it’s worth, all three of my sons went through a “Goth” period” so I can picture two of my kids in the roles.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    Dear Sandra,

You are really in touch with your muses…and the other side. I dread the day that paranormal entities have an Inhuman Resources department. Would truly be time to shuffle off this mortal coil.

Your story conjured up on the road is out of this world. Loved the image of a Vampire kitten. Perfect foil for all the faux Vampire stories that lurk in the FF shadows.

    Aloha,

    Doug

I absolutely adore the Addams Family, darling! As I read, I was hoping for some bon mots to appear so that Gomez might say “Tish! That’s French!”

You had me at vampires! personally i think I’d be too distracted by scenery on such a drive to come up with stories. Unless of course there are vampires stalking the scenery?

  22. HI Sandra,
Finally getting to your delightful story. There are enough monsters there to fill a haunted mansion. Those Goths should be salivating with satisfaction. I think your Halloween muse is getting warmed up. ron

HAHA! Loved it. 🙂 I know it has characters typically portrayed in horror tales but I liked it too much to be afraid. (wink, wink)
