There Goes The Neighbourhood – What Pegman Saw

St Louis

“I think I may have over-reacted,” Louella stammered, as the kids, apparently stunned by their mother’s outburst, awkwardly kicked their heels on the porch.

“On the contrary, it was extremely thoughtless of us,” the old man said stiffly, “but we never thought how it might look, our giving them candies like that; things were so different in our day, you see.”

“Look, why don’t you pop round for tea tomorrow,” Louella said apologetically, “I’m sure the kids would love that, and you can get to know them better.”

The elderly couple accepted with obvious delight and, descending with care from the porch, hobbled across the street back to their new home.

As they stood in their doorway waving at the kids, the old woman squeezed her husband’s hand.

“If only it were always that easy, my dear,” she whispered, with what might, on a good day, pass for a smile.

What Pegman Saw offers writers the chance to write 150 words prompted by Google Maps.  Feel free to take a Pegman stroll around the neighbourhood for your inspiration, if this picture doesn’t hit the spot.  I would, if I knew how to save a picture from Google.  😦

About Sandra

I used to cruise the French waterways with my husband four or five months a year, and wrote fiction and poetry. Now I live on the beautiful Dorset coast, enjoying the luxury of being able to have a cat, cultivating an extensive garden and getting involved in the community. I still write fiction, but only when the spirit moves me - which isn't as often as before. I love animals, F1 motor racing, French bread and my husband, though not necessarily in that order.

  1. Dear Sandra,

What a pleasant surprise to see you in this neighborhood. 😉 Perhaps Louella didn’t overreact after all. Well done as always.

    Shalom,

  4. Great story, Sandra. It has me wondering what the nature of the outburst was. Glad you’re participating in this prompt!

Ain’t it so! Gone are the days when you could compliment a kid, or give them a treat without people having a holy cow. It is a sad, sad testament to our present day reality. People are so quick to think the worst. Glad this mom was able to roll and accept the kindness.

  6. Somehow I see something sinister going on here. Is it me or just a sign of the times?
