Living only three or four miles from Corfe Castle as we do, it would be impossible not to take the opportunity to respond to the Heritage prompt with a few pictures of a sight that we must pass several times a week, and which we never tire of admiring.
Corfe Castle guarded the principal route through the Purbeck Hills. Originally a wooden construction, it was rebuilt in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. When it was captured by the Parliamentarians, systematic destruction of the castle began in 1646. It’s thought that many of the houses in the surrounding village of Corfe were built by stone that had been salvaged from the ruins. The castle and surrounding land was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1982 by the Bankes family.

And the old railway running past Corfe Castle has also been preserved! I first visited when I was about 10 years old.

My husband volunteers at Southern Locomotive in Swanage. We regularly use the railway and the line runs through the bottom of our valley. I can’t see the locos but I can see the head of steam! 🙂
