A divorcee herself, Ellen has total empathy.
She embraces me. “That’s what friends are for, hon.”
“And thanks for the quiche,” she calls, as I leave.
Ellen’s always been excruciatingly tactful. She hates quiche and won’t touch it, even though I’ve incorporated the finest cheese available, and carefully selected wild mushrooms, fresh from the woods.
My ex-husband loves quiche. He’s also a sadistic bastard, an emotional terrorist, and I’ve worried about Ellen, from the moment I first spied his boots on her porch.
So I’m helping her out here.
That’s what friends are for, surely?
