Jacob sits by the camp-fire, rifle cocked, listening to the noises in the tent.
Hell knows, it never took me this long, he thinks.
The couple emerge from the tent, the guy startled when he sees Jacob, whilst the woman smiles.
“In you get, hon,” says Jacob, jerking his head in the direction of the truck.
His wife obeys, blowing him a kiss.
“Now run, boy…”
The man flees, like a frightened rabbit.
Jacob is a gentle soul; in his world everyone deserves fufillment, each in their own way.
He speaks softly into his phone.
“Quarry scented, hunt is on.”
Up in the frozen north of England, in a hotel room with ony half the light bulbs working (yet again), we’re finally engaging in the last Friday Fictioneers for January. We’re getting there… thanks Rochelle.
The things people do for a bit of sport these days! Chilling and darkly amusing at the same time Sandra.

Dear Sandra,
Subtly chilling story. Jacob doesn’t strike me as being all that gentle. 😉 Well done as always.
It’s so cold in what they’re calling the Polar Vortex (Missouri, Illinois, etc) today that even postal delivery is halted for the day and every school in the area is closed. Some businesses are even shut down for the day.
Stay warm.

I’ve been watching the scenes in horror, Particularly the one where the presenter brought out a wet t shirt which froze solid in 60 seconds. There’ll be some great photo opportunities I guess, but frustrating if you can’t get to them. Stay warm, stay safe.

Thanks Dale. Written in a rush on the motorway on the way north to help with a family issue. If I’d paused for reflection I might have tried for a gentler story. 😉

What a rollercoaster ride this story is. First I was cackling about ‘never took me that long’, then being thoroughly creeped out by the odd relationship between these three, and the idea of the hunt. Very sinister and great writing as always.
