Reaching a Conclusion – Friday Fictioneers, September 2021

Copyright Penny Gadd

I like to walk by the river at dawn – it helps me reflect, to see things more clearly.

“We were only drifting along, you and I,” he’d said, “not really going anywhere.”

That wasn’t the way I’d seen it; I thought we had a future together.  He was everything to me.

I didn’t watch him go, just let him drift away.

Besides, I had to bury the knife and freshen up a tad; I hate messy endings.

I like to walk by the river.  I see things more clearly.

To be honest, now I’m wondering whether he really was my type.

Apologies for a re-tread again, originally posted 10 years ago, although I believe it may have had a second outing five years ago. My excuse this week is unique – it was our silver wedding anniversary yesterday. How time flies. Thanks to Rochelle for hosting Friday Fictioneers; why not join us?

About Sandra

I used to cruise the French waterways with my husband four or five months a year, and wrote fiction and poetry. Now I live on the beautiful Dorset coast, enjoying the luxury of being able to have a cat, cultivating an extensive garden and getting involved in the community. I still write fiction, but only when the spirit moves me - which isn't as often as before. I love animals, F1 motor racing, French bread and my husband, though not necessarily in that order.

Gosh! She literally watched him drift away & put an end to the mess.
Knife is buried somewhere in the river-bed. Will the cops be on her trail?

  3. Dear Sandra,

I love the way you bring this story full circle with a little murder in between. I think I might remember this one…but only because it’s so good. A pleasure to read it again. 😉

Remember the day when is wasn’t FF until somebody got murdered? Seems to be less of that around these days, but yours were always standouts – the subtlety and circularity of this one make it a masterclass.
CONGRATULATIONS on the silver wedding – what a wonderful story to celebrate it with too 😉

Yes, it was a hotbed of murder at one point, I remember. Then someone pointed it out to me and I switched over to dysfunctional families. I’d had far more experience with that anyway. 🙂

  7. She seems so cold, treating a murder in a what.else.is.new? way

  11. If she was to get caught she’d probably get 25 years, but they wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying as those that you have just celebrated! Congratulations, Sandra.

Everybody else already commented on the masterful use of repetitions here. I also loved the humour. I am a bad person and laughed out loud.

‘Freshen up a tad’… Ooo I loved that. With that you didn’t just bury the knife, you twisted it too. I hope the poor chap deserved it.
