The Puzzle – Friday Fictioneers, March 2022

Copyright Lisa Fox

Until the will was read, I didn’t even know we owned a cottage in the Cotswolds.

Clearly the solicitor did; he had, as my son would say, a face like a slapped arse.

“He…  errr… several years ago…  a tax ploy I think….”

So here I am, weekend after weekend.

Searching.

Waiting.

Thinking.

Because if I can’t discover what or who drew him here all those times when he was supposed to be on business trips, then I have to look closer to home…

… to determine whether something, someone drove him here.

And I don’t know which is worse.

Many thanks to the leader of Friday Fictioneers, who continues to keep this happy band of writers flexing their imaginations, week after week. Thank you, Rochelle.

About Sandra

I used to cruise the French waterways with my husband four or five months a year, and wrote fiction and poetry. Now I live on the beautiful Dorset coast, enjoying the luxury of being able to have a cat, cultivating an extensive garden and getting involved in the community. I still write fiction, but only when the spirit moves me - which isn't as often as before. I love animals, F1 motor racing, French bread and my husband, though not necessarily in that order.

  5. Dear Sandra,

Brilliant writing as always. I agree with Iain. A set up for a longer story. I want to know what secrets were kept and by whom. “Face like a slapped arse.” That’s going to stick with me. 😀

    Shalom,

Not knowing is the biggest pill to swallow. All that unfinished business that can potentially never be understood. You are so adept at these, Sandra.
Face like a slapped arse is definitely going to stick with me!!

Well, Sandra, as ever this is smooth and stylishly written. I wasn’t exactly sure of the relationships to start with but you pulled it all together in the end and I’m almost as keen to know as your protagonist!

I was pleased to be reminded of my love for the Cotswolds. If Putin felt such love he would not be destroying Ukraine

Oh dear. Do they really want to know the answer, I wonder? Maybe just sell it and move on.

Yes, did anyone know and understand his secret. The answer of ‘something’ perhaps would hurt more than ‘someone’. A puzzle waiting to be solved.

Life can bring such moments, unfortunately. Maybe the best solution is just to give up on finding out the sordid details and enjoy the Cotswolds. I missed visiting there when I was in the UK in 2019 for a few weeks, but they’re on my wish list if I ever get back. Great description of the solicitor.
