Over here in the dark
your life is like a stage to me.
I think you know that, since most of it is played out on your balcony for me to see.
No-one would believe what I’ve seen you do, just as no-one would believe I’m sitting here, snuggled in my blankie, hot-water bottle on lap, whisky bottle at hand…
…watching you die.
You slipped on the ice, it’s not my fault, you were there to tease.
Your glorious hair is greying now.
With frost.
This isn’t my fault.
I didn’t do anything.
And I won’t, just yet my love.

I felt the chill of that ice in my veins. The voyeur is like a spider in a web. Excellent detailing with how cozy she is as she watches the unfortunate’s life ebb away.

Hi Sandra, I’ve notice a trend in your stories of a helpless victim that receives no sympathy from the narrator. Quite dark in many ways.

I’m having some difficulty getting in touch with the lighter side of life these days. Maybe I should take a break from writing. Thanks for reading.

I think it was. Maybe an element of chance is the final icing on the cake for the observer.

Well, I’d probably prefer the word ‘macabre’ to ‘morbid’ but each to his own. 🙂 Thanks for reading.

Chilling, Sandra. A sociopath, perhaps? No sense of conscience, no empathy or sympathy, not MY fault! Really well-written.

Yes, exactly. Just happy to observe, I guess.

I love that the voyeur and victim could be man or woman. I reread to make sure I didn’t miss some sign 😉 Glorious hair could apply to both sexes….
I’m thinking this is no ordinary voyeur since, the show will be over now that the victim’s life is slipping away.
As always, fabulous writing!

Thank you Dale. Yes, I couldn’t decide on the sexes so I stripped out any indications. Glorious hair made me think of some kind of ladies man, a professional charmer who’d been getting off living his life on the balcony for the benefit of others. Glad you enjoyed it.

I love that you left it open for your readers to interpret. And I thought the same thing regarding the hair!

That is not how James Stewart would have handled that. That was deliciously dark and very well presented. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sandra,
A disturbing little tale! One wants to label these types sociopaths and misfits and leave it at that. But there’s something more, a need for revenge of a personal kind related to their past. Only rationalizations for the irrational of course, similar to the schadenfreude that “normies” feel at their acquaintance’s misfortunes. What evil within does that spring from? As always, Sandra, your writing packs a punch and makes me want to be a better writer.
