Just Sayin’ (Blog)

I’m not convinced about ‘blogs’.   Sometimes I think ‘why would anyone consistently want to follow what other people are thinking/doing?’   But then, I follow quite a few blogs, and for the most part I find what I read interesting.  Maybe I just assume that my life away from boating is so mundane that nobody else would be remotely interested in what I have to say.

Aside from that morsel of self-deprecation, however, there are times when I just want to share something, or simply indulge in venting about life’s little irritations, regardless of who might be picking up on it and there are a few of these on the index below.  But principally this page indulges my fiction writing activities, these days mostly confined to  Friday Fictioneers, an international community writing group centred started by Madison Woods and now being hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields.

Around the middle of each week Rochelle posts a photograph as a prompt for members to write a 100 word story (or thereabouts) and pretty soon after that posts her own submission.   A ‘linky tool’ enables the rest of us to post links to our own stories on our websites.   Members are encouraged then to visit as many websites as they can to comment.  At the moment there are over a hundred of us, several of whom are published authors,  meeting up regularly each week, and if you want some constructive criticism just say so on your post.  The links to the stories I’ve written are posted below, with Friday Fictioneers in the title.  Many thanks to Rochelle for her efforts, I can imagine how much work is generated by this.

For a while I also contributed to 100 Word Stories for Grown Ups, Five Sentence Fiction, Flash Fiction Faction, Trifecta …. but these days my time seems to be in short supply.  The work written for these groups also appears under this page (together with any general blogs I may feel moved to share) and can be found by clicking on the links on the index below.

Confession: I sometimes think blogs are silly too. But I love reading them and I love writing one, so we might as well embrace the silliness!

🙂 🙂 Blogging just seems like a silly thing for me to do; it seems eminently sensible and interesting when it’s done by others. (Well mostly. 😦 ) It’s the same with Facebook. It seems so natural when others say “I’m at the National Gallery” or “I’m at the pub”, but when I posted recently “We’ve just grounded the boat in the middle of the channel on the River Saone” I felt quite embarrassed about it.

  4. I thought that about blogging as well – until I started blogging. It was originally a way to promote my weaving which I started when I stopped writing:) but blogging got me back to, well, writing.

  5. I hear ya. I now feel like blogging is like my own silly little journal, that other people can see, but that’s cool.

Hi Dave. We’re fine, just got back from France after a quick post-winter inspection of the boat. The starter battery had expired so we couldn’t take her out, but everything else was fine. We were due back today but saw the weather forecast for northern France and southern England so came back Sunday instead. I love snow, but not when we’ve got 600 miles to drive in it! Take care. 🙂

      • We got 13-15 inches of snow again yesterday but I have a plow truck (Most people do here.) so there isn’t any shovelling involved. The bilge must be on a separate battery I assume? There’s truth to the cliche that boats are a hole in the sea in which you routinely throw money. 😉

  8. I find it consoling to see that there are people out there that think like me. I also appreciate being made to laugh by an ordinary person, probably just being himself, rather than a “professional” comedian. Just my humble opinion. 🙂

Hmmm…I never thought nobody wouldn’t wanna hear what I had to say. Not arrogant but it never crossed my mind. I just figured if I read somebody’s blog, the universe would point some folk my way. There are some good blogs out there and I’ve discovered a quite a few.

What is mundane to the person writing the blog may well be mind-boggling to many readers in different situations.
Flash fiction in all its forms is a useful discipline for any writer – as well as giving a short, fun read.

  13. Hello Sandra, I am a late-comer to all things social media. I’ve enjoyed reading a select few blogs over the years, but only after I realized that Facebook/Instagram/Pinterest weren’t really the right forum for me to say whatever it is I felt like saying did I begin to contemplate writing a blog. I find that I do best when I don’t imagine who might be reading it as that mental pressure feeds into whatever insecurities I might be indulging at the time. Not sure what my intention is with the thing; I’ve only been writing it for three months. But an unexpected joy for me has been “meeting” some very interesting and interested people from all over the world. That is a huge benefit and a motivator to continue on this journey. And occasionally a serendipitous encounter with a new (to me) blogger proves to make the whole thing sort of worthwhile. I feel sure I’m going to enjoy delving into your blog. Regards, Barbara

Hi Barbara, I missed this earlier in the year. Looking at the date I think we were in the midst of cruising so little wonder I guess. Now, of course, we know each other better so it doesn’t surprise me that you’ve hit the nail right on the head – thinking about who might be reading what we write is indeed a pressure that can limit the author’s style. It’s pearls like this I’ve come to expect from you! 🙂 And I can heartily recommend your blog to anyone visiting mine. Happy New Year to you.

Blogging is a conversation. Some are humorous, some are serious, some are thoughtful, some are interesting, some are plain silliness, and some aren’t worth having…you get the idea. I really like Momus News’s stories on Fictioneers. I don’t read a lot of fiction online, but his stories are really good. He is also a good photographer. I only participated in Fictioneers once, because I don’t write a lot of fiction. Nice to meet you. Thanks for visiting my blog.

What great idea to archive your work and have it available like this – I hope to come back and explore one day – I also can see how you evolved as a blogger – there are so many sides to it – and I know for me personally I am in what I call a third phase. And I have noticed that it is a changing things for folks – some stay doing it while others go and yet others find their unique de and flow (like you perhaps) anyhow, have a great day….

🙂 I’m not convinced there’s much of an appetite for books full of short pieces. Pity though!

I’m not so sure about that. Some modern readers are keen on short reads while commuting or between longer books… It would be nice to have them together. It’s something I’m thinking about myself, but not yet. I don’t have half as many as you:)
