A Truly Cold Dish – Friday Fictioneers, April 2022

Copyright Carole Erdman-Grant

Passed the old school just now.  Gotta say my artwork’s still lookin’ good.

I signed it Baz Woz Ere!

I’m not Baz.  That’s my mate.

Landed him a heap of trouble, that.

My talent paid off though.  Got me sharp suits, flash car.

And a new country gaff – on my way there now.

I think I see Baz as I park up outside the cottage.

He nods a weak greeting but doesn’t stop.

Still sore, I guess.

I open the gate and stand back to admire… what the actual f***!!

Three feet high, red, blue, green…

BAZ WOZ ERE!

This photo of Kananskis café was taken near Banff, Alberta by my old friend Carole Erdman-Grant, the founder of Women on Barges, a facebook page for barge-dwellers, cruisers, and just generally female boaties.  Today there are in excess of 3000 members all over the world.  Earlier this year, during the storms that swept Europe, Carole suffered the kind of sudden, devastating personal loss, with ensuing change to her circumstances, that many of us have nightmares about.  Yet she keeps on keeping on.  She’s just about the strongest, most resilient and inspirational lady I have ever known.  Bless you, Carole.

Thanks also to another strong, resilient, inspirational lady, Rochelle, the leader of Friday Fictioneers, for keeping our happy band of writers going.

About Sandra

I used to cruise the French waterways with my husband four or five months a year, and wrote fiction and poetry. Now I live on the beautiful Dorset coast, enjoying the luxury of being able to have a cat, cultivating an extensive garden and getting involved in the community. I still write fiction, but only when the spirit moves me - which isn't as often as before. I love animals, F1 motor racing, French bread and my husband, though not necessarily in that order.

  4. Dear Sandra,

I guess Baz laughs best. 😉 Many thanks to you and Carole for sharing her picture and story. She’ll be in my thoughts and prayers. As usual, you’ve written a good one. Love the way Baz retaliated.

Now they’re even. But I bet the guy with the flash suits finds a way of turning the vandalism to his own advantage.
